Conference aims
Simply the Best will explore the issues involved in collecting the papers of women in our cultural institutions and how our institutions at local, regional, national and international levels can best build on this knowledge to ensure their future existence.
The issues facing female collections will include:
- digital technology
- concerns about on-going sustainability
- shifting focus to audience needs and accessibility
- promoting and marketing
- collection development
- effective volunteer management are all topics of consideration
Keynote speaker - Dr Katie Holmes
A journey though Australian women's archives
Dr Katie Holmes, historian, writer and lecturer in History at La Trobe University, Melbourne is the keynote speaker at this years Hawke Library conference. Katie's research interests began with the study of letters and diaries of Australian nurses from World War One. Katie continued with a study of Australian women's diaries from which she wrote her book Spaces in her Day: Australian women's diaries of the 1920s and 1930s. Katie's research interests include women's autobiographical writing, single women, feminist historiography, gardens, landscapes and the role of the garden in enabling women to establish a sense of place Katie's keynote address will encompass research in archival and manuscript collections and issues of privacy in relation to the collection of memory.

Welcome and Opening Address by the Hon RJL Hawke, Former Prime Minister of Australia
Facilitator: Professor Alison Mackinnon, Director,
Hawke Research Institute
for Sustainable Societies
Alison Mackinnon was appointed Professor of History and Gender Studies in
1997 and is the Foundation Director of the Hawke Research Institute for
Sustainable Societies. She has written widely on women's history and
shamelessly haunts women's archives and collections. She is currently
writing a collective biography of women in the 1950s and 60s for which she
draws on collections in Australia and the US, particularly university
collections such as the Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in the
United States.
