Reliability: Is the author/producer of the information identified?
With books, there is often information about the author or the authors as part of the book. For example, some edited books have a section called 'Notes on Contributors' which give some background on those who have written for the book.
With journal articles, some contact details for the author are usually included at the beginning or end of the article.
With websites, information about the site's author or sponsor can be determined in a number of ways.
- from the website's address. This information is frequently between www. and the first forward slash. For example, the URL for the site http://www.greenpeace.org/~climate shows that the information comes from the Greenpeace organisation.
- many sites provide additional information on their home page or through a link to an 'About Us' page
- some sites, such as the one below provide a link on their home page called 'Contact us'
