Relevance: Is the information a primary or secondary source?
Some assignments require the use of primary sources. Primary sources include, diaries, letters, manuscripts and original accounts of events; legal documents, constitutions; and social documents such as birth registers, and tax records.
If the information is presented as raw figures, as with this example of census data, it is a primary source.

If the information has been analysed and interpreted it is considered a secondary source. This information can also be presented graphically as charts or maps.
Books and journal articles, which interpret or collate research may be considered secondary sources in some disciplines, while journal articles may be considered primary sources in other disciplines.
