Databases: Structure
Understanding of the structure of a database will help you locate and retrieve information more efficiently.
Information about each item in a database is called a record. For example, the UniSA Library catalogue has a record for each item (ie books, journals, newspapers, dvds, maps etc) held by the UniSA Library.
A record contains elements of information called fields.
Fields in a record may include
- author(s)
- titles
- publisher
- notes or summary or abstract
- subject headings
- source
These fields can be used to search a database.
