Journals: Academic/scholarly journals

Why is it important to use academic/scholarly journals?

  • the articles in academic journals are by authors who have an in-depth knowledge and expertise in a discipline, and who are recognized as experts in their field
  • the articles build on existing knowledge in a discipline
  • academic articles are generally more current than books
  • some academic journals are peer reviewed or refereed

Peer reviewed or refereed journals

Within academic journals, there is a group known as peer reviewed or refereed journals. Your lecturers will sometimes specify that they want you to find information from these journals.

Peer reviewed journals only publish articles that have been reviewed and critiqued by a panel of subject experts. As such they are considered to be more prestigious than other academic journals.

To confirm if a journal is peer reviewed:

  • check for confirmation in the printed copy
  • check the web site for the journal or the publisher
  • check the name of the journal in the database called Ulrichs International Periodical Directory. Any titles displayed with the peer reviewed symbol       symbol are peer reviewed journals
