Identify concepts - continued

Once you have identified the concepts, synonyms and related terms you can use them as keywords for your search.

Results that contain your keywords are likely to be relevant.

In identifying keywords, remember to consider the following:

  • spelling variations - organisational or organizational
  • plurals - virus or viruses

Truncation symbols shorten words and can be used to find both the singular and plural forms of a word, and words that begin with the same base:

Truncation symbols vary, for example * (asterisk),  $ (dollar sign), ? (question mark) and exclamation mark (!).

  • virus* finds virus and viruses

  • priva* finds private, privacy and privacies

For a guide to truncation symbols used in Library databases see Wildcards / Truncation / Phrase Searching
