Examples of course integrated facilitation of information literacy for undergraduate students

Information Technology Concepts [Bachelor of Business Management Information Systems, Bachelor of Business (E-Business)]
Students had weekly written activities that involved using search engines or databases to find information on the web. In lecture time Bronte Cerny, Liaison Librarian for the School of Accounting and Information Systems, discussed effective use of search engines to search for information. In tutorial time students had an opportunity to search for information for their weekly activities.

Concepts of Professional Nursing Inquiry [Bachelor of Nursing] The course addresses issues of independent lifelong learning and the student as a learner. Students worked through a series of readings and activities introducing them to the principles of information literacy. They then applied this knowledge to plan their search for information, select relevant information sources and use the selected information to complete an assignment. Students were required to submit their information search plan and an analysis of information sources with their assignment.

Analytical Chemistry 3 [Bachelor of Applied Science (Chemistry and Applied Microbiology) or (Chemistry and Chemical Process Technology)]
Students were assigned an analytical technique and two species.
The task was to locate recent literature that would help them assess whether one or both of the species they were assigned could be analysed in a miniaturized laboratory system. Students were expected to work in groups and were asked to find a recent journal article, an internet document and a monograph that would inform the set task.

Human Nutrition [Bachelor of Applied Science (Human movement)]
Students used electronic and print resources to obtain information about a nutrition topic of interest. They then had to summarise selected information and communicate it as a PowerPoint presentation to their tutorial class. In the process of gathering and summarising the information, the students had to demonstrate an ability to discern scientific information from anecdotal evidence and deliver a scientifically correct oral presentation.

Visual arts professional practice [Bachelor of Visual Arts(specialization)]
Students were asked to investigate the types of awards and grants available in Australia and to construct an application for a grant. This activity involved using the virtual library and search engines to locate organisation homepages as well as print reference sources in the Library.

Technical Communication [a foundation course in 18 Division of EASS programs]
Students used a web-based resource How to find information for your assignment to complete the associated worksheet that required them to develop a search plan, use databases and the catalogue to find information for an assignment topic and evaluate the information sources
