This video assumes that you already know how to navigate to the Emerald database. If you need help with this, we recommend you view the Accessing Databases video first.
Emerald contains the full text of quality journal articles in many management-related subject areas. The first screen you see is the Advanced Search Screen.
Let's search for resources that contain information on Logistics and Manufacturing.
Notice that we will enter each concept in its own search box. To include both concepts in our search, we will use the connector AND. For more information about Connecting Search Terms select the link to UniSA Library's online guide.
If we have alternative words that mean the same thing, put them in the same box. For example, next to Manufacturing, we can also enter Production.
To get results that use either of these words, select Match Any.
Similarly, to get all variations of the word Manufacturing, such as manufacture, or manufacturer, replace the varying part of the word with the Truncation Symbol: an asterisk. For more information see the save time searching databases with truncation, wildcards and phrases online guide (PDF 129kb, opens in new window).
By default, Emerald searches all parts of a record, including the full text.
To search for your terms in a specific part of the reference, select an option from the drop down box. Let's search the Abstract only.
Notice that there are also options to limit to a specific Date Range.
Select the Search button.
On the results screen, results are ranked by relevance under each type of resource.
This screen shows some brief information about the article, including Citation Details, Resource Type and Full Text options.
Selecting Preview under a title of interest will display the Abstract.
To view the whole resource, select a full text option -such as View HTML or View PDF.
If no full text was provided, check Summon on the Library Homepage to see if the Library has a copy elsewhere.
If you decide you want to add more search terms, you can select Modify Search; or start again by selecting New Search.
Alternatively, select a tab to limit to Publication Type. Let's select Journals.
Refining to a format type allows you to add records to a short list, in order to print or export them to bibliographic management software later.
To view your short list, select the Marked List link.
The list of Marked Records for this session is provided below. Only ten items can be added to this list.
If you want to add more records to a list, you need to set up a free account with Emerald.
To Export or Print files from your list, tick the box next to those of interest and select either Print or Export.
When exporting, Emerald allows you to Download the File to import into Endnote, or Directly Export the file to Refworks.
For more help on marked lists, exporting records and on using Emerald generally, select Support > For the User.
