RefWorks

How to access RefWorks

The University of South Australia Library subscribes to RefWorks, and UniSA staff and students can access it both on campus and off campus. A mobile application, RefMobile, also gives you access to your references in your existing RefWorks account from your smart phone, mobile phone or PDA.

It is important to access RefWorks from the Library website, so that you are recognised as a UniSA user. You need to sign up for an individual account when you first access RefWorks, and use this account each time.

RefWorks is now available to all UniSA alumni as a standard feature, as well as through paid UniSA Alumni Library Memberships. Alumni members receive access details in their welcome letters. Please contact LBY-Admin@unisa.edu.au if you have lost the password or need further information on the Alumni Library Membership.

  • Access RefWorks (opens in new window)
    • Offcampus users will be asked to authenticate using your UniSA username and password
    • You should not need a group code if you have accessed RefWorks from the Library website. However, if still prompted for a group code, you can retrieve it by checking your RefWorks welcome email, or by requesting a password reminder from the RefWorks login center page
  • Working with RefMobile
    • Use the group code to access RefMobile

Adding references from databases

Direct export

Direct export allows you to mark items in a participating database or catalogue, then export them directly into your RefWorks account.

Import Filters

If direct export from a database is not available, you may be able to use import filters in a two stage process to import the records.

Search online catalog or database

Using a connection file from within RefWorks allows you to connect to, search, and import references from freely available resources such as the University of South Australia Library catalogue, other library catalogues and PubMed.

Creating documents

Write-N-Cite feature

The Write-N-Cite feature inserts references from RefWorks into your Microsoft Word document.

Outside the University network, you need to download the Write-N-Cite software and install it onto your computer. Go to your RefWorks database, and select Tools - Write-N-Cite to download the software. Alternatively, download the Write-N-Cite feature from RefWorks Help (opens in new window). Select Writing your Paper and Formatting your Bibliography, then Using Write-N-Cite.

Once you have installed the Write-N-Cite software, you also need to configure it. UniSA allows users to access the RefWorks subscription through a proxy server, so users must add the URL of our proxy server via the Write-N-Cite Proxy Configuration Utility.

To configure the RefWorks Word plugin (WNC) please follow the instructions below

Windows users

  • Create a RefWorks account if you have not already done this
  • From the Start Menu select Programs and then RefWorks
  • Select the WNC Proxy Configuration Utility
  • Enter the following: https://ezlibproxy.unisa.edu.au/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
  • Click OK

Macintosh users

  • Create a RefWorks account if you have not already done this
  • Activate Write-N-Cite
  • Select Preferences from the Write-N-Cite menu
  • Enter the following: https://ezlibproxy.unisa.edu.au/login?url=https://www.refworks.com/Refworks/?WNC=true
  • Restart Write-N-Cite for this proxy configuration to take effect

After running the utility, when you launch Write-N-Cite you will be directed to UniSA's proxy server to login rather than going directly to RefWorks. After this login you will see the RefWorks individual login center page.

Referencing styles

Styles control the appearance of references in a bibliography. Check the Output Style (opens in new window) list for available referencing styles.

Note: The RefWorks Harvard style is similar to the Harvard style used at UniSA, but is not an exact match. You may need to customise it, to meet your paper's style requirements. Alternatively, ask your lecturer if the RefWorks Harvard style is acceptable.
