Introduction
A large number of newspapers and news services are available electronically. This guide deals mainly with full text electronic sources, and looks primarily at Australian news services. Some services may allow free access to current issues, but charge to search archived material. Also, some electronic versions of newspapers may not contain the whole of the print version
News databases
The Library currently subscribes to several different news databases that provide access to print and television news items.
- Newspaper databases provides access to the print media databases subscribed to by the Library
- TV News provides access to media clips on the TVNews database
Newspaper Directories
The directories below will take you to individual newspapers on the web. There are directories that cover South Australian, Australian and International newspapers
You can find Australian newspapers by their title, or by state or town, and link to their online equivalents. Note that some South Australian newspapers are only available in print form

- Australian Newspapers Online (opens in new window) is produced by the National Library of Australia
- Yourguide (opens in new window) from Fairfax Digital Regional Network has a network of community based web sites supported by more than one hundred and sixty of Australia's local newspapers.
These sites will help you to find newspapers from around the world by title, or by region, country or city, and link to their online equivalents. Note that some online newspapers are written in the local language and may not have an English equivalent
- ABYZ News Links (opens in new window) has links to worldwide news sources by country or by region. It is regularly updated and has an internal search engine
- NewsVoyager (opens in new window) finds newspapers by title, country or city name
- Newspapers.com (opens in new window) has links to the world's newspapers
- OnlineNewspapers.com (opens in new window) finds newspapers by country or by title
- Paperboy (opens in new window) has links to newspapers by country, city or title
- World-Newspapers.com (opens in new window) contains newspapers, magazines, and news sites in English, sorted by country and region
Major Newspapers
Search the Library Catalogue (opens in new window) under the title of the newspaper this will indicate whether the Library has access to the newspaper in print or electronic format. Many local, Australian and international newspapers are accessible in full text via the Library databases. If the University of South Australia library does not hold a particular newspaper search the State Library of South Australia catalogue (opens in new window) as it holds most Australian newspapers

- the online newspapers below usually provide news for the current day only
- you are able to search by keywords within some sites
- some online newspapers are written in the local language and may not have an English equivalent

- The American Reporter (opens in new window) is an electronic news brokerage owned by the reporters who contribute to it. It claims to be unbiased, having no political, corporate or other affiliation
- Australian News Commentary (opens in new window) describes itself as "Independent commentary to counter the left-leaning, politically correct bigotry of a majority of mainstream journalists"
- Crikey (opens in new window) is an Australian independent online news service with news and commentary on politics, media and business. There are free and subscription sections.
- The Drudge Report (opens in new window) is a US independent web based news service, run by Matt Drudge. Amongst the tabloid gossip you will sometimes find ground breaking news stories
- Google News (opens in new window) presents information culled from approximately 4,500 news sources. An automated grouping process pulls together related headlines and photos from thousands of sources worldwide enabling you to see how different news organizations are reporting the same story
- JournalistExpress (opens in new window) is a media site that has links to news wires, broadcast, newspapers, headlines, news archives, directories and market information
- New Matilda (opens in new window) delivers a weekly online magazine, generating topical analysis and debate, and gives readers the opportunity to have a say in developing policy. NewMatilda promotes truth in public life, independent political commentary, policy based on public good and citizen power in decision making
