Library Policy No 3
The Australian Library and Information Association has a Statement on Professional Ethics (opens in new window) which includes the following:
Librarians and Library Technicians must maintain and enhance their professional knowledge and skills to ensure excellence in the profession by encouraging the professional development of co-workers and by fostering the aspirations of potential members of the profession.
The University of South Australia Library seeks to be recognised nationally and internationally for its contributions to the profession of Librarianship through research, publishing, database development and other special projects. Towards this end:
- Involvement by staff in relevant professional associations/activities will be encouraged and supported
- All librarians and library technician staff are encouraged to develop an annual or ongoing project or in-depth professional association involvement. The expectation is that such activities may involve both an institutional and a personal time commitment
To facilitate these activities limited funding will be made available after the evaluation of proposals by the Library Leadership Team.
Proposals will need to meet most of the following criteria:
- Of academic relevance to the University
- Of utility to the Library
- Of utility to other libraries within the State and preferably nationally and internationally
- Of utility to the applicant's CV
- A potential revenue source
Examples of such activities include:
- conduct of a state or nationally focused seminar (within the Library's aim to conduct one state seminar in mid year and a national seminar at the end of the year)
- clearinghouse/database development
- directory publication
- a national or international survey/investigation/study tour
- continuing education workshops
- committee or executive involvement in a professional body
The Library recognises the limited opportunities for professional job mobility within the Library and State and seeks to provide librarians and library technicians with opportunities to strengthen their own CVs when applying for these positions.
