Printing and viewing PDFs
We recommend that you have the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to view pdf files, download the latest version from the Adobe website (opens in new window).
Recommendations when viewing problems arise:
- Try to see if the size of the document is reasonable. Usually problems develop with documents that are too large i.e. greater than 2Mb
- Check whether document has non-English fonts imbedded or linked, as fonts may need to be downloaded and installed to view, if for example Asian or Arabic fonts are involved
- If documents aren't opening when viewing via the web, then from the Edit/Preferences/Options Menu, untick the box Display PDF in Browser
- In Internet Explorer got to the Tools menu/Internet Options/Advanced tab/HTTP1.1 settings - both boxes need to be checked

Recommendations when printing problems arise:
- Always use the Print Icon in the Adobe Acrobat window to print, and NOT the print icon in Internet Explorer menu OR the File/Print menu option
- Select Print as Image from the Print Menu if document won't print correctly, otherwise disable it if printing is too slow
- Decrease the Postscript Language Level in the Print Options window. Level 2 is the normal level for HP Laser Printers
- Decrease the print resolution of the document i.e. instead of 600dpi, try 300 instead.
- For printing large documents to heavily used shared printers, try printing in blocks of 5-10 pages at a time
- Try ticking the Save Printer Memory Box if printing is consistently taking a long time to complete.
- Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed
- Install Adobe Universal Postscript Printer Drivers
