Bob Brown once described Bob Hawke as, ‘Australia’s Environmental Prime Minister’. The Hawke Government oversaw a period of extraordinary progress in Australia’s environmental history, firstly delivering on a 1983 election promise to stop the Franklin River damming.
The Hawke Government created an environmental legacy - protecting wilderness areas, expanding and gaining new World Heritage listings, preventing mining in Antarctica, and introducing Landcare, among many other ground-breaking environmental policies. Hawke built mutually beneficial relationships with the Australian Conservation Foundation and the Wilderness Society. As Early as 1989 the government considered reducing Greenhouse Gas emissions.
This exhibition, On Australian Soil: Hawke’s Environmental Legacy will explore the Hawke Government’s environmental actions and policies.
