Saturday May 17
On 17 May 1990, the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from the Classification of Diseases. Since 2005, this date has been observed annually as the International Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination, serving both to acknowledge progress in reducing discrimination and to highlight the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ people.
The inaugural IDAHOBIT in 2005 has since evolved to include various identities within the LGBTQIA+ spectrum. Initially known as IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia), the observance expanded in 2011 to include transphobia (IDAHOT), and by 2018, it further encompassed biphobia and intersex discrimination, adopting the acronym IDAHOBIT. In 2022, the day grew to be referenced as the Day Against LGBTQIA+ Discrimination to specifically include those who are lesbian, queer, and asexual.
While 17 May is a day to reflect on progress, discrimination remains a pressing issue.
IDAHOBIT presents an opportunity to foster an inclusive environment for students and staff at UniSA. Show your support by:
