International Day of People with Disability

International Day of People with Disability (IDPwD) is observed on December 3 and aims to increase public awareness, understanding, and acceptance of people with disability.

Did you know:

  • 18% of people in Australia have disability
  • 53% of people with disability aged 15-64 were in the labour force, compared with 84% of those without disability in the same age range in 2018
  • 33% of adults with disability experienced high or very high psychological distress, compared with 12% of those without disability in 2020-2021

The United Nations chooses a theme to focus on each year, and for 2025 this is Fostering disability inclusive societies for advancing social progress.

Making society more inclusive

The Australian Government Department of Social Services released a 2024 update for Australia's Disability Strategy 2021-2031, which names greater inclusivity of people with disability in leadership roles as a policy priority.

The IDPwD website contains a variety of resources to assist with inclusive action, including:

  • Language, terminology and etiquette guidance
  • Resources for workplaces and schools
  • Governance and Legislation frameworks
  • Resources for working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and members of the LGBTQIA+ community

The UniSA Library is committed to supporting people with a disability by providing inclusive accessible services, spaces and resources. You can find out more about these on the Library’s Diversity and Inclusion page.
