Vale Sir Eric Neal

The University of South Australia Library acknowledges with sadness the passing of Sir Eric Neal AC CVO on 2 September 2025. Sir Eric Neal was a distinguished engineer, business leader, and public servant whose career spanned decades of significant contributions to Australian industry and civic life. A graduate of the South Australian School of Mines, an antecedent institution of the University of South Australia, Neal's early career in engineering led to executive leadership, including 14 years as CEO of Boral and board roles with major companies such as BHP, Westpac, and John Fairfax Ltd. In 1996, Sir Eric became the first businessman appointed as Governor of South Australia, serving with distinction until 2001. He later held prominent roles, including Chancellor of Flinders University and Chair of key advisory councils in South Australia.

The Sir Eric Neal Collection held in the Sir Eric Neal Library at Mawson Lakes documents his extensive professional and community service. It is a lasting legacy of a life dedicated to leadership, innovation, and public good. We extend our deepest condolences to Sir Eric’s family, friends, and colleagues.
